Favorite Books My Characters Would Recommend & the Books They Secretly Love

Everyone has a guilty reading pleasure, right? Well, in my world my characters do also. Therefore, in this blog I’m going to talk about the books my characters would recommend and their secret guilty pleasures, including books on vampires, zombies (ooo, shiver), pants (yes, you read that right, pants) and Mandalas. What's a Mandala you ask? Read to find out!

Journey in Friday Fun: If My Characters Were Dogs (Prepare Yourself for Cuteness)

It's finally Friday. And I'm in much need of a distraction. So let's have some silly Friday Fun and pretend for 5 minutes that all the world's problems could be solved if we just cared about each other as much as we cared about our dogs. I mean. I get it. I love my dog, even when she wakes me up at 5 am to throw up on my carpet (which she does more frequently than I'd like). How could I not love that face though? Look at her, she's adorable and she loves books! She's perfect! Alright, so we've established dogs are adorable and great. Let's take this up a notch. Since I had so much fun writing a blog on “if my characters were Barbie dolls,” I thought I’d try a variation on this theme. In this blog, I’m going to do, if my characters from The Travelers were dogs.

Journey to Staunton, VA for a Book Signing: Part 1 – The Past

Tomorrow, I am going to Staunton, VA, about 2 hours south of where I live in Northern Virginia, for a book signing for The Travelers at the Sacred Circle Bookstore. Just a few months ago I visited Staunton for the first time. As I walked the streets, I fell in love the quaint small town – the classic, narrow 3 story buildings pressed together lining brick sidewalks, the large windows inviting me into the stores, the street lamps, the restaurants. (It also helped that Staunton’s main street has 3 book stores in a one block radius, one of which is Sacred Circle.)

Journey in Bookstores: Celebrating Independent Spirit

This weekend I will be in Staunton, VA signing my book, The Travelers, at the wonderful Sacred Circle Bookstore and Gift shop. (If you live or happen to be nearby come and see me!) Sadly, finding a bookstore like this one is rare. While I love my local Barnes and Noble (I will take any place where I can get physical books), I miss the small book retailers, the unicorns of the book world. There are so few now. But, they can still be found, check out a few here.

Journey into Fall: A Farm Full of Pumpkins, Aliens and Peter Pan

Today I walked outside, a bright sun shone like a spotlight on all the vibrant reds, mellow yellows, and perfect peaches still clustered in the trees. The rest of fall crunched on the ground beneath my feet. It reminded me of... Continue Reading →

Journey in Toys: My Characters in Doll Form

The US Presidential election is only a few days away and the country is in turmoil. But, I’m tired. I’m tired of the arguing and depressed about the awfulness that is suddenly OK again. So, you know what? I want to talk about something else. I want to talk about Barbie dolls. And not just talk, I went on a hunt to see if I could find Barbie dolls that look like the characters in my book, The Travelers, or at least the way I picture them.

Journey in Make Believe: Costume Trends and the Popularity of the Witch

Only a few more days until Halloween! So let’s talk costumes. What costume do you think is the most popular? Well, this awesome graphic from I found on the NPR website shows the trends in costumes from 2009 to 2013. Zombies - How I Dislike Thee, Let Me Count the Ways I can't seem to escape the brain-eaters! I don't even watch the 'Walking Dead' and I'm still traumatized just from the media coverage.

Journey in Children’s Lit: Great Halloween Books for Kids

Only 3 days to go until Halloween. Now adults can have fun on Halloween. (It's allowed. Don't feel bad.) But, let’s face it, kids relish dressing up in costumes and stuffing themselves full of candy more than most of their adult counterparts. (I said most, not all.) In honor of that, here’s a list of great kid’s books to get those tots in the Halloween spirit. Don’t have young kids? Shhhh, don’t tell anyone but some of these will make even adults laugh.

Journey into Wicca: Real Women Thought to Be Witches

There are 12 days until October 31 and for #12 on my Halloween-themed blog countdown, let’s talk about witches. Clearly, I’m a fan of them since they’re the main characters in my book, The Travelers. But, today, I don't want to talk about fiction. I want to talk about real witches or those thought to be real.
